Honoring Major General David Lamme Stone: The Legacy Behind the Stone Education Center
The Stone Education Center at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) stands as a tribute to the remarkable career of Major General (MG) David Lamme Stone, a distinguished leader and innovator in the U.S. Army. Born in Stoneville, Mississippi, MG Stone graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1898 and went on to serve with distinction in both the Spanish-American War and World War I.

A Visionary Leader and Builder
During World War I, MG Stone undertook the monumental task of developing and constructing Camp Lewis, now part of JBLM. With a mission to create a training center capable of accommodating 50,000 soldiers, he completed this ambitious project in just 90 days. His success earned him the role of Camp Lewis Commander, cementing his reputation as an extraordinary leader and organizer.

Decorated Military Career
Over his 42-year Army career, MG Stone received numerous honors for his service. His U.S. military awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star, and Purple Heart. Additionally, his overseas contributions were recognized with prestigious foreign decorations such as the French Legion of Honor and Croix de Guerre with Palm, the Belgian Order of Leopold, and the Panamanian Order of Vasco Núñez de Balboa. MG Stone is interred at Fort Lewis Cemetery, leaving behind an enduring legacy.
