Indo-Pacific Nations Bolstering Defense Ties, Capabilities
(Key words): Remarkable progress has taken place over the last year or so, with the agreement for access to four additional Philippine bases which will host rotational U.S. forces, he said. These bases will provide an ability for the U.S. to respond to a number of regional contingencies, including humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, he said. The department is also working with the Philippines on a new security assistance roadmap to try to help them develop some of the asymmetric capabilities that will be most important for the types of challenges that they're facing, particularly around their maritime periphery, Ratner said. https://www.defense.gov/News/News-Stories/Article/Article/3421858/indo-pacific-nations-bolstering-defense-ties-capabilities/

The Pentagon is freaking out about a potential War with China
(Key words): The war began in the early morning hours with a massive bombardment — China’s version of “shock and awe.” Chinese planes and rockets swiftly destroyed most of Taiwan’s navy and air force as the People’s Liberation army and navy mounted a massive amphibious assault across the 100-mile Taiwan Strait. Having taken seriously President Joe Biden’s pledge to defend the island, Beijing also struck pre-emptively at U.S. and allied air bases and ships in the Indo-Pacific.https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2023/06/09/america-weapons-china-00100373

Pregnant women at Kadena Air Base in Japan facing tough decisions
(Key words): Pregnant women at Kadena Air Base in Japan are being notified they won’t be able to deliver their babies at U.S. Naval Hospital Okinawa, the only full-service medical center on the island, due to a staffing shortage. Women at Kadena whose estimated due date is from August through November are being given a choice: Either go to a Japanese medical facility or be placed in a “Stork Nesting” program in which they’ll be flown to a location in the continental United States, according to a June 7 memorandum signed by Air Force Lt. Col. Travis C. Russell, chief of the medical staff at Kadena’s 18th Medical Group. The staffing shortage is expected to be resolved by the end of the year, he stated.https://www.armytimes.com/pay-benefits/military-benefits/health-care/2023/06/08/pregnant-women-at-kadena-air-base-in-japan-facing-tough-decisions/

Can this internal review help shrink the Air Force’s pilot shortage
(Key words): The Air Force hopes that a new review underway at service headquarters will help reverse its longstanding fighter pilot shortage, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. CQ Brown said Wednesday. Lt. Gen. Jim Slife, the service’s deputy chief of staff for operations, is taking a fresh look at whether the Air Force needs hundreds more pilots to fill policy-making and managerial jobs — or if airmen with a different background could fare just as well, Brown said during a discussion at the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies.https://www.airforcetimes.com/news/your-air-force/2023/06/08/can-this-internal-review-help-shrink-the-air-forces-pilot-shortage/

Why Imran Khan has disappeared from Pakistan's media
(Key words): Mr. Abbasi says his name, then stops himself: "He filed an application under article six against Imran Khan… I apologies, against the chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e Insaf." We tried to speak to Mr. Abbasi, but he did not get back to us.
Over the last week, you will have struggled to hear Imran Khan's name or see his picture on Pakistan's media. His arrest a month ago on corruption charges is the backdrop to this crackdown. When Mr. Khan was taken from a court complex in Islamabad on 9 May, protests were sparked around the country. Some protested peacefully, but there was also violence. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-65831780

US casts doubt on reports of China building spy base in Cuba
(Key words): The Wall Street Journal first reported that Chinese and Cuban officials had reached an agreement for the spy base, with Beijing slated to pay several billion dollars for the facility. CNN has also reported the arrangement, but U.S. officials are denying those reports. Pentagon press secretary Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder called the reports “inaccurate” during a briefing on Thursday. “Certainly we know that China and Cuba maintain a relationship of sorts, but when it comes to the specific activities outlined in the press reporting, based on the information we have, that is not accurate,” Ryder said. https://thehill.com/newsletters/defense-national-security/4041513-us-casts-doubt-on-reports-of-china-building-spy-base-in-cuba/
