Access Guidelines for Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM)
Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) is a controlled access installation designed to ensure the security and safety of all personnel and visitors. Understanding the entry procedures and requirements is essential for a smooth and hassle-free visit.
Access Requirements for Vehicles
Authorized ID Cardholders:
Vehicles with an adult, authorized Department of Defense (DOD) ID cardholder (18 or older) may enter JBLM through any open gate. This includes both the Lewis Main and McChord Field gates.
Non-ID Cardholders:
Vehicles without an adult, authorized DOD ID cardholder (18 or older) present must report to the Visitor Control Center (VCC) adjacent to either the Lewis Main Liberty Gate (I-5 exit 120) or McChord Field Main Gate (I-5 exit 125) to receive a Temporary Pass. To obtain this pass, you need:
- A valid driver's license
- Vehicle registration
- Proof of insurance
- An adult, authorized DOD sponsor (18 or older) willing to sponsor your base access, available by phone.
Visitor Control Centers (VCC)
At the VCC, reception clerks will:
- Verify the vehicle driver's valid license, registration, and proof of insurance.
- Ensure all passengers aged 16 and over present a form of photo ID.
- Conduct a routine background check before issuing a Temporary Pass.

REAL ID Act Compliance
JBLM adheres to the REAL ID Act of 2005. Visitors presenting IDs marked “Not Valid For Federal Purposes" or "Federal Limits May Apply” must provide supplemental documentation to prove their identity to receive a temporary installation pass. For a list of acceptable documents, visitors should check the JBLM website. Visitors without compliant ID or supplemental documents must be escorted at all times on the installation.
Passes for Vendors and Contractors
Contractors and vendors need to present a fully completed “Installation Contractor / Vendor Pass Request Form” at the VCC. This form includes sections for the employee, employer, and the overseeing government agent.
Temporary Pass for Residents’ Guests
Residents can request a pass valid for up to 90 days for their guests by contacting the VCC 72 hours in advance. The procedure involves:
- Calling the VCC and providing your name, residence address, guest’s name, date of arrival, and duration of stay.
- Ensuring the guest presents valid vehicle registration, proof of insurance, and a driver’s license upon arrival.
Pre-vetted Passes for Group Visits
For groups such as scouting or school visits, passes can be issued up to seven days before the event. Pre-vetted passes allow for processing during off-peak times. An adult, authorized DOD sponsor must make arrangements by calling the VCC.
Access for Foreign Nationals
Foreign national visitors must process at a Visitor Center for security vetting and to obtain a pass. They must present a current passport with a valid entry stamp.
Submitting Personally Identifiable Information (PII)
For security background checks, the VCC requires certain PII. While this information is usually obtained in person at the VCC, special events may necessitate pre-vetting. Do not send PII through unsecured means; use the Army's approved Safe Access File Exchange (SAFE) website.
Motorcycle and Scooter Access
Operators of motorcycles and scooters must present a valid Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) card and their Common Access Card (CAC) to gate security officers. Those without a valid MSF or CAC will be denied access.
Firearm Registration
Unregistered weapons are not allowed on JBLM. Newly assigned service members have 24 hours to register their weapons at either the Lewis Main or McChord Field VCC.
