Major General David Lamme Stone: A Legacy of Leadership and Innovation
The Stone Education Center at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) serves as a lasting tribute to Major General (MG) David Lamme Stone, a pioneering figure in U.S. Army history. Born in Stoneville, Mississippi, MG Stone graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1898, embarking on a distinguished military career that spanned over four decades and left an indelible mark on the armed forces.
A Visionary Builder During World War I
MG Stone's leadership shone brightest during World War I when he was tasked with creating Camp Lewis, now an integral part of JBLM. Charged with building a training facility capable of housing 50,000 soldiers, MG Stone accomplished this monumental feat in just 90 daysโa testament to his exceptional organizational skills and dedication. His success led to his appointment as the Commander of Camp Lewis, solidifying his reputation as a visionary leader who could turn ambitious plans into reality.
A Career Decorated with Honors
Throughout his 42 years of service, MG Stone earned recognition for his bravery and contributions both at home and abroad. His U.S. military accolades include the Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star, and Purple Heart. Beyond these domestic honors, MG Stone's international impact was celebrated with prestigious awards such as the French Legion of Honor and Croix de Guerre with Palm, the Belgian Order of Leopold, and the Panamanian Order of Vasco Nรบรฑez de Balboa. These decorations highlight his global influence and dedication to fostering cooperation among nations.
An Enduring Legacy
MG Stone's contributions extended far beyond his military achievements. His vision and leadership laid the foundation for what would become JBLMโs thriving community. Today, he is interred at Fort Lewis Cemetery, remembered not only for his service but also for the enduring impact of his work.
The Stone Education Center continues to honor MG Stoneโs legacy by supporting education and development for service members and their families. It stands as a symbol of his commitment to excellence and innovationโqualities that defined his remarkable career and continue to inspire generations at JBLM.
